HP Printer Security Checklist

A networked printer is a computer. Secure it like one. This checklist hardens any HP printer or scanner before you put it on a business network.

Change the default admin password

Open the HP Embedded Web Server in a browser at the printer's IP. Go to Security -> Account Policy and set a strong admin password before doing anything else.

Restrict who can print and scan

Enable PIN-on-print or PIN-on-release. Restrict scan-to-folder destinations to a single secured share.

Enable TLS and disable old protocols

In Networking -> TLS, force TLS 1.2 or 1.3. Disable SMBv1, SNMPv1/v2, and Telnet under Network Services.

Patch firmware on a schedule

Subscribe to HP firmware notifications and patch within 14 days of release. Most HP Enterprise printers support scheduled auto-firmware-update.
