Inkjet vs Laser Printers

Inkjet and laser printers solve different problems. This guide walks through cost per page, print speed, paper handling, and which HP families fit each use case so you can pick with confidence.

How the two technologies work

Inkjet printers spray microscopic droplets of liquid ink through a moving printhead. Laser printers melt powdered toner onto paper using a fuser drum. Inkjet excels at photos and rich colour; laser excels at crisp text and high-volume mono printing.

Cost per page in real money

HP inkjet cost per page on the HP ENVY and DeskJet lines is typically 5-8 cents for colour and 2-4 cents for mono using standard cartridges, dropping to under a cent on HP Smart Tank ink tanks. HP LaserJet mono toner runs 1-3 cents per page, and colour LaserJet runs 4-8 cents per page. Over 10,000 pages a year the difference is hundreds of dollars.

Speed and warm-up

Modern HP LaserJet M-series prints 30-40 pages per minute with a first-page-out under 7 seconds. HP OfficeJet Pro inkjets reach 20-25 pages per minute. Inkjets win on first photo printed; laser wins on a 50-page report.

Which family fits you

If you print fewer than 100 pages a month and care about photos, look at HP ENVY Inspire. If you print 100-1000 pages a month of business documents, look at HP OfficeJet Pro. If you print over 1000 pages a month, look at HP Smart Tank (inkjet, very low cost per page) or HP LaserJet M-series.
