HP Ink vs Third-Party Ink

Third-party ink cartridges are cheaper. Are they safe to use? Here is what we tell every customer who asks.

The short answer

Using non-HP ink does not automatically void the printer warranty under the Magnuson-Moss Act, but if a non-HP cartridge causes damage, that specific damage is not covered.

When third-party ink is fine

Refilled OEM cartridges from a reputable refiller, on a printer past its warranty, on a model where you print fewer than 50 pages a week.

When to stick with HP

On a printer still under warranty, on a Smart Tank model (use HP-branded ink bottles), or when colour fidelity matters (photos, marketing).
